A computer-on-module (COM) is a type of single-board computer, SBC. The COM module is a complete computer built on a single circuit board, meant to function as a super component. The design is typically centered on CPU and chipset with RAM, input/output and all other features of a motherboard on the one board.

However, unlike a single-board computer, the COM module will usually lack the standard connectors for any input/output peripherals to be attached directly to the board. Instead, the wiring for these peripherals is brought to board-to-board connectors for the module to dock onto a carrier board.

The carrier board or baseboard is typically custom-designed to meet requirements for application specific or customer specific functionality and form factor. Reference- or development-carrier boards are available for early development work.
