Development of embedded telemetry systems based on COTS using wireless modules and a ready-to-go Linux computer platform |
The strategy to use a standard COM module on a custom made carrier board is well known. It's often the fastest route to the latest standardized computer technology and a way to focus development resources on product specific functions on the carrier board. This strategy can be combined with ready-made hardware modules for wireless communication like GPRS, GSM, GPS, WLAN and possibilities with Linux ready to be implemented. The combination enables wireless embedded systems to be developed cost-efficiently and fast in order to achieve shorter time-to-market. This presentation is based on experience from development of distributed transponder systems for automotive applications where hardware modules and off-the-shelf embedded Linux functionality are used for data communication and remote node software upgrades. |

Embedding x86 technology - COM, SBC or full-custom |
| This is a guide on how to choose the correct approach taking into account the many factors in an embedded development project. The three main alternatives are to design with a computer module on a carrier board, using a single board computer or to go for a full-custom design. The choice is depending on for instance the type of application, the time-to-market requirements and production volumes. Other aspects are the size of the NRE investment needed, unit pricing and maintenance and support issues. The presentation will walk you through the advantages and disadvantages, economically and technically, and give an overview of popular x86 platforms and solutions from Hectronic. Hectronic boards and systems are based on industry standard form-factors as well as purpose-built designs. |
