BIOS adaptation and integration issues in embedded x86 projects |
Custom designed embedded x86 systems, often require BIOS modifications to manage integration between a COTS CPU board and customdesigned hardware, such as a carrierboard for a COM module for example. This could involve areas like IRQ routing, power management, PXE boot or for example security features. We take a look at the advantages if being able to manage BIOS customization, to solve specific technical problems. |

Helix - Embedded Linux distribution and toolkit |
| Building and maintaining Linux systems involves more than compiling a Linux kernel and writing an application. Linux systems commonly consist of millions of additional lines of code contained in tens or hundreds of open source software packages. This additional software needs to be carefully selected, configured, compiled and installed.Helix is a tool in the challenge to initiate development rapidly, reach project goals and maintain the embedded Linux system. A set of software packages, utilities and compilers provide an easy way to configure, build and maintain the system. |

Ultra low power designs with new COM modules |
| Overview of the possibilities with lower power consumption in embedded designs based on COM modules in general and with new UMPC-platforms such as Intel's Atom in particular. Power consumption versus computer performance is discussed and the possibility to use intelligent power management functionality. Different formfactors and pros and cons with different COM module standards are covered, specifically in regards to the different featuresets of UMPC-platforms compared to more traditional notebook-platforms typically used in COM modules. |

COM Modules - An overview |
| Computer on modules are available in a number of different form factors and standards that fit a wide range of applications. This is a brief guide to the most common COM module standards, their feature set and when to choose what module, as well as what platforms typically reside on the different modules. We will also specifically go into what Hectronic and its partners offer in new module standards like Q7 and COM Express, as well as older legacy module standards like ETX or small single board computers such as PC104 that can be used as COM modules. |
