Poverty is still great in Senegal, despite many years of political stability. And as always it’s the children that suffer the most. About 100 000 children live on the streets. They survive on begging for money and food.
The story of Awa
”My name is Awa and I live in Kaolack with my mother, six brothers and sisters and my grandmother. I had one more sibling that died. When my father left us my mother had to take care of us by herself. She received no help from anyone and didn’t have a job. Often we had no food and our stomachs ached from hunger. But then SOS Children’s villages helped us. Now my mother works and we go to school. And we get food. I have a lot more strength now and I’m much happier. It’s nice not to be hungry.”
