Announced in September 2015 the Skylake processor family uses Intel’s 14nm manufacturing technology with 2nd generation 3-D tri-gate transistors to offer increased CPU and GPU performance compared to previous generation Intel Core i processors (Broadwell).
The products launched include versions with support for DDR4 memory up to 2133MHz and up to 32GB. ECC is optional. This improves power consumption and data transfer speeds significantly to meet the increasing requirements for responsiveness and data access without increased heat generation.
Based on 6th generation Intel Core i7/i5/i3 processors the product group includes versions supporting three independent video streams and Ultra HD 4K resolution. In addition to the standard display interfaces of VGA, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort, there is now support for DP++ which allows for both DP and HDMI signals off one interface.
Furthermore common interfaces found among the released products are dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports, support for PCIe Generation 3, USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, SMBus and LPC.
